Dedicated to the memory of Andrew Homes

It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our colleague and friend, Andrew Homes, who died recently, aged 55.

Andrew loyally served Laing O'Rourke for nearly 34 years, starting out his career on a drawing board at Sizewell B when he joined John Laing in 1990.  He went on to support the design on many of our flagship projects including the Second Severn Crossing, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Dubai International Airport, Heathrow Terminal 5 and Manchester Metrolink, the list goes on...

Andrew managed the Temporary Works team in the North for over a decade and was key in establishing the temporary support to our DfMa products, especially with the work he did with lattice slab falsework.

As a manager he was very supportive, flexible, forward thinking and nurturing, always keen on training and motivating the next generation of young staff that came into the department.   He was a great engineer, able to simplify complex challenges and provide practical solutions.

Andrew was a great person to have in the business and just “got on with the job”.  Always ready to help and assist others without hesitation and often going out of his way to do so.  As an expert in his field of work, he was the go-to person for advice for many across the business.  He always enjoyed a conversation.

Laing O'Rourke, travelling and watching sport were his passion.

Andrew's 30+ years of experience will be difficult to replace, he was well thought of throughout the business and will be hugely missed.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his colleagues, friends and family at this extremely difficult time.

Great Great Great Great man!!! I just cannot believe that we have recently lost two of the greatest persons, Piotr and now Andrew. I last spoke to Andrew in August 2023. An amazing man very much loved and respected. A great loss to us, but a fantastic gain to the heavenly / afterlife construction team. Thus looking forward to what afterlife building project both Andrew and Piotr have built!!

It’s extremely sad news to hear of Andrew's passing. I worked for Andrew during a 1 year placement in his temporary works team. But I enjoyed my time so much, I stretched this out to a 2.5 year placement. Andrew was a large reason for this. Despite his fake grumpy persona, he was an exceptionally caring person, who genuinely enjoyed mentoring engineers. Just never call him Andy. As well as temporary works, Andrew blessed me with knowledge of gambling at the horses, fantasy football, travelling the world and many more quirky interests that you couldn’t help but talk about with him. A very interesting person to sit next to for 2.5 years! He had an incredible way of simplifying and explaining any problem into a manageable thought process. I can’t emphasise how much I learnt and how much I enjoyed my time working for him. Laing O’Rourke, Temporary Works and the countless engineers he has mentored are all vastly better off from having known him. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this time.
